Presence of Absence, 81cm x 68cm
My work consists of a series of monotypes that explore light, and aim to create expression through the use of subtle colour, in an effort to achieve a rich, painterly quality in print. I have restricted myself in terms of colour, to evoke qualities of light and shifts of mood, by placing muted tones side by side.
I have been inspired by the quality of the 'uncanny', and what intrigues me is a sense of unease, of something lurking beneath the surface, something dormant. I want to evoke an eerie disquiet in the viewer, a feeling of lonely empty silence. This sense of discomfort is heightened by the concept of threshold - the passageway to something unknown. Light, in the form of a shadow, suggests the notion of liminality, as it is cast onto the wall. This gives a sense of inside and outside which I have attempted to heighten with dappled light, the shape of the leaves introducing a lyrical sense of movement, growth and life beyond. Juxtaposing light and dark, I have created contrasting environments.
My most recent work, Beyond the Veil, and Screen continues to develop my exploration of the quality of the 'uncanny'.
